Transformation Is Our Goal

One Man. One Prison. One Question. That Cracked Everything Open

Fourteen years ago, Dr. Doug Carnine walked into Tucker Max Prison in Arkansas — the same maximum-security prison made infamous by the movie Brubaker — and met Roy Tester, a man serving a life sentence for killing his parents after years of brutal childhood abuse.

Doug, drawing on 50 years as a Buddhist, realized something uncomfortable: he had no idea how to relate to a man who'd lived a life the polar opposite of his own. So he proposed something radical — a Mindful Kindness Project, built from scratch, inside the walls of one of America's most notorious prisons.

Then three more men convicted of violent crimes joined in. Doug mentored them in mindfulness and meditation. They mentored him in something he couldn't have taught himself: how to find kindness in hell.

Together, all five broke down the belief that had defined the four men's lives for decades — unlovable. Unworthy. Beyond saving. In its place, they built something new: repaired relationships, restored dignity, and a reason to keep going.

That's transformation! That's the mission of the KINDR Foundation. And it was only the beginning.

A Model for Creating a Culture of Collaboration: Peer Mentoring Program

Developed by Kindful Restoration and the KINDR Foundation, this model builds prison environments that actually support recovery, rehabilitation, and lasting change — bringing facility leadership and incarcerated individuals together as partners, not opposing sides.

At the macro level, the model helps prison administrators identify and deliver programs that meet incarcerated individuals' rehabilitative needs — supporting more successful reentry, lower recidivism, fewer infractions, and less job-related stress for staff and correctional officers. At its center is a new Peer Mentoring Program that trains incarcerated individuals to become positive peer leaders: a cadre who work alongside facility staff to promote safety, model kindness, deliver evidence-based programming, and mentor fellow Adults in Custody (AICs).
